08 – Pedestrian Bridges and their Importance

Before I start testing and analysing my two models, I would like to delve into some research I conducted concerning the importance of deployable pedestrian bridges.

The Role of Portable Pedestrian Bridges in Disaster Response

Portable bridges can restore transport links between areas to ensure that essential supplies can get to those who need them and injured people can be swiftly evacuated, directly saving lives.

Compared to building permanent bridges, portable bridge structures are much cheaper and faster to install, providing a temporary solution for urgent need before more permanent infrastructure can be rebuilt.

Deployable pedestrian bridges can connect communities which have been separated, providing short-term access to healthcare, employment and economic opportunities to residents after the disaster. This allows locals to continue with their lives and keep earning money until a more concrete solution can be found.

Challenges of Transporting and Deploying Temporary Structures

There are many challenges that come with the use of deployable bridges. There is always a clear balance between portability and strength, and these two constraints must be optimised for best performance.

Temporary structures also need to be moved quickly to where they are needed, often through difficult-to-access areas. Large components and assembly machinery can increase transport costs and may require specialist vehicles.

More conventional temporary bridges can require skilled workers and significant assembly time, delaying vital access after an emergency.

Examples of Existing Portable Bridge Designs
  • Bailey Bridge: A modular steel bridge developed during World War II. The prefabricated panels can be transported separately and assembled on site, so it is useful for military and emergency applications.
  • Medium Girder Bridge (MGB): A lightweight modular bridge used for rapid assembly. Very little heavy equipment is needed to construct this design.
  • Mabey Compact 200: A more modern panel bridge use for temporary crossings. Its interchangeable components allow structures of different lengths to be assembled.
  • Deployable/Folding Bridges: Some modern designs use folding or scissor-like mechanisms to reduce the size of the structure during transport before expansion at the required location.
